Proposed Session Description
As legislation and notoriety around carbon emissions reductions expand, building owners are developing long-term strategies to achieve lofty goals. Many turn to the existing building commissioning (EBCx) process as their first step along the journey to net zero and will use the EBCx process to establish the foundation for their “behind the meter” strategy. This presentation will show, through the use of a case study, how EBCx can connect what is happening in the building's mechanical room impacts the decision made in the Board Rooms. Discussions include the development of the EBCx scope to align with sustainability goals, how energy conservation measures are developed, prioritized, and implemented.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
From our leadership to our analysts in the field, we are deeply committed to elevating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within our company, across our projects, and throughout our communities. Our people and the relationships and partnerships we forge are what drive us, and our goal is to cultivate a sense of belonging and create a team where everyone feels like they are part of just that – a team. While this presentation does not specifically address DEI perse in terms of explicit learning objectives, our presentation and case study highlight is a natural example of just one of the many client engagements where we collaborate and partner with organizations and energy steering committees that are diverse in perspective. The energy steering committee leading the engagement on our client side is a shining example of women in leadership, and we are actively engaged and aligned with organizations that are equally committed to keeping DEI at the forefront of their business.
Learning Objectives
1. Learn how to prioritize the EBCx process to align with legislative and sustainability goals.
2. Identify how to frame the process to ensure it is seen as valuable from the mechanical room to the board room.
3. Recognize how to assess the progress towards goals and adapt the process to ensure timely achievement.
4. Develop programmatic training material for ongoing Cx to ensure savings are sustained, and building operators are encouraged to continue the program.

Saverio began his career commissioning aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy before moving into an engineering and consulting role within the energy industry. In the past 20+ years, he has developed and led commissioning and energy programs for a wide range of facilities, with a focus on healthcare, mission-critical facilities, and high-end pharmaceutical laboratories. He is a results-oriented energy program developer, recognized for published case studies and articles, piloting innovative energy reduction projects for city and state agencies, and the creation and delivery of several accredited education programs. He is particularly known and lauded for his TED Talk presentation style and engaging his audience, and is frequently invited to present to clients, partners, and industry stakeholders across varying platforms. Serving as a board member of the Building Commissioning Association and adjunct professor for the CUNY School of Professional Studies, he had cultivated expertise and experience developing and teaching efficient operations strategies and nationally accredited courses to local union schools, city agencies, and healthcare institutions. His work as a trusted adviser has allowed him to help define legislation in support of NYC’s energy and carbon emissions goals. It is this dedication to the energy industry that earned him an Urban Green Service Award from the NYC Chapter of the US Green Building Council and the Energy Engineer of the Year Award from the NYC Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers.
