Proposed Session Description
A net zero project goes beyond all-electric energy—it starts with material. Understanding a material’s impact on a project’s carbon profile is crucial as net zero construction advances, and mass timber is a leading player. Bowdoin College’s Center for Arctic Studies & Mills Hall are Maine’s first fully mass timber buildings. We'll study Bowdoin’s focused effort to align the project with decarbonization targets, from mass timber evaluation to all-electric infrastructure design and implementation.
Why is this session important?
As higher education campuses continue to establish and implement progressive decarbonization goals, mindful construction decisions are at the forefront. What building materials best support decarbonization? What building systems can we utilize to reach net zero energy?
Learning Objectives
Measure the benefits of mass timber structures in relation to embodied carbon in new building design compared to other structural systems.
Describe the alignment of a college’s core educational and research mission on climate, environment, and human activities for specific building projects.
Cost to benefit of different mechanical systems.
