Proposed Session Description
Much of the building stock that will need to undergo electrification in the coming decade is composed of relatively small multifamily and class C office buildings, which serve an important function in providing naturally occurring affordable housing and low-cost office spaces for small and mid-sized businesses. Is the construction services market that serves this segment of the industry ready for electrification? What new business models are needed to serve these buildings at a large scale, while maintaining their affordability?
Why is this session important?

ROUND 1- YES BUT WITH MODIFICATIONS? Bomee is a terrific speaker - although this is outside her usual sphere I would think this will be very good. Would really like to see expanded focus on delivery models.

Round 1: YesGood and important topic that all are struggling with.Intriguing workforce dev. and equity lensThe more solution oriented, the better.

ROUND 1 DISCUSSION: Proposal is a bit underdeveloped, but we know Bomee Jung. Small multifamily/class C office buildings unusual, important pairing. Could go technical: how to retrofit. Could go equity: communities of color, important resource. No speakers identified. Ask to include different business models: lease models, energy of service.

Elizabeth Engoren Thu, 05/13/2021 - 1:50 pm

YES - this session will focus on crucial question: what contractors need to be competitive and prepared to support retrofits for these small and C-class buildings? In other words, what will expand market capacity to then enable owners to make their retrofit choices? I think this is a crucial topic and hasn't been talked about from the right angles or including the right stakeholders, and Bomee has the knowledge and ability to create a great session. Of all the ones I've read this year, this is the one I'm most excited for!

Susan Farber Wed, 05/19/2021 - 11:05 am

ROUND 2 DISCUSSION: Focused on what contractors need to be competitive and support retrofits for small buildings. Hope to bring in Deputy Mayor Thompson. Could fill in a gap in conference programming. Strong presenter, possibly too high level. Could suggest that she could include the proposer of 141.

Diversity and Inclusiveness
My thesis is that many of these buildings are in communities of color, and the service providers who would work on them are MWBEs or small contractors with roots in those communities. Will those folks get the resources they need to do this work?
Learning Objectives
Understand the potential impact of retrofitting the middle of the market
Understand the business constraints of operating middle-market buildings (as owners) and renovating them (as contractors)
Learn about new service delivery models designed for the middle market
Learn about the role of MWBE businesses in the middle market
Has this session been presented before?
No
Additional Comments
Session length would determine how many speakers - Ideally, I would have a multifamily owner, class-C owner or rep, contractor/builder, and a market wonk

Sorry y'all - I do have speakers in mind, but I haven't reached out to them yet, so I would prefer not to fill this out yet.
