Boston 2023 Areas of Focus
Proposed Session Description
To achieve mass adoption of offsite construction, the building process as we know it has to be reevaluated from multiple perspectives. This is especially true when combined with the goals of scaling up low carbon and high performance objectives.
The session will explore how the three primarily residential companies have built their businesses around offsite manufacturing principles and have developed strategies to “unsilo” the industry. By focusing on collaboration instead of competition, problem solving instead of finger pointing, and true participation at all levels, each company has achieved successes which stand in stark contrast to the siloed workflows found in typical construction.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
It directly addresses new roles and opportunities for women in the construction industry as we move toward an offsite construction model.
Learning Objectives
To investigate how three different companies approach offsite manufacturing and reinforce vertical integration of the design-build process
To consider how integrated design, pre-manufacturing, and construction optimization each play a role in transforming the industry
To explore what to expect as a client or partner in an offsite construction project
To examine and share ideas for adoption of offsite fabrication practices to support the scaling of high performance construction
Has this session been presented before?

Additional Comments
This presentation was submitted to PhiusCon 2022. However, it was not accepted. Instead, Edie and Beth were invited to speak on a panel about scaling up. Therefore the structure and presentation information are fundamentally different.
It was also submitted to Passive House Canada Offsite Symposium (online), which occurred in September 2022. Similarly, the format was significantly changed so different information and presentation format is proposed here.
Session Format
Presentation followed by facilitated discussion or breakout groups

Presenters
Full Description
- A new way of working has to be established to meet goals of a more efficient and scalable built environment.
- Women are playing a key role in this new construction paradigm. The three presenters play diverse roles within their companies, and as such, will showcase how a range of crossover job opportunities exist between the construction, design, architecture, engineering and business sectors.
-Each presenter has a distinctive approach to the “pre-manufacturing” process for high performance buildings. The speakers will highlight effective strategies used to achieve beautiful, scalable, and efficient projects.
-We will explore:
- What a shift toward offsite construction means for companies beginning to evolve away from traditional building methods
- Ideas for preparing your company systematically and contractually to incorporate offsite manufacturing into your workflows
- How to encourage buy-in from key stakeholders
- Strategies for vertical integration, whether teams are fully in-house or networking collaboratively
- How offsite manufacturing mitigates risk for clients
- Concepts around scaling up high performance residential construction via offsite methods
