Proposed Session Description
Solar Homes Inc has achieved the first certified Net Zero Renovation under the Canadian Home Builders Association's certification program. This home began renovations in 2015 when very little information was available to the project coordinator. It combines an insulated exterior finish with advanced mechanical systems and Solar PV generation.
How to renovate a home to Net Zero Energy in a cold climate. Content will cover;
The Why - Carbon neutrality, reduced bills, increased comfort.
The How - Construction techniques and modelling.
The Where - anywhere that has good solar exposure.
The What - What does it mean to be Net Zero Energy
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Net Zero renovations can be done on many different types of building in all areas of the continent.
Learning Objectives
Why - Operational carbon neutrality, increased indoor comfort (air quality, sounds, smells, etc) and lowered operational costs. Renovating your home to Net Zero is not only morally satisfying, it also has lifelong comfort and security repercussions.
How - Energy modelling, construction techniques (particularly limiting moisture risks), operation of mechanical systems.
Where - What makes a good Net Zero Renovation candidate? Status of existing building has a great deal to do with whether a Net Zero Renovation is appropriate. Asbestos, structural risks, age of building and solar potential significantly influence overall value delivered to the customer.
When - If all buildings will be renovated to Net Zero standards, then certainly the time is now. Current interest rates combined with ever increasing energy and carbon costs make this an excellent time to invest in your home. In some cases a complete life electrification (home and car) can be done cashflow neutral.
