I am submitting this proposal on behalf of Anti Racist Action Group (ARAG). I am one of the founding members of ARAG which is one of the 'Communities Of Practice' within the Bottom Lines program.
Proposed Session Description
Have you, or the company you work with, expressed interest in being more diverse, equitable, and inclusive? Do you work at a company already committed to DEI work and wants to continue doing that work with other like-minded folks? Is this the first time you have heard about building professionals discussing anti-racism and want to learn more? If any of these questions resonate with you, this session is for you!
Diversity and Inclusiveness
This session directly addresses DEI and hopes to elevate the conversations within the NESEA community from theoretical conversations to actual practice and struggles with anti-racict situations. The purpose of this session is to exemplify NESEA's strategic priority: "Embrace the work of anti-racism and become more just and equitable."
Learning Objectives
Participants will increase their knowledge of anti-racism theory and practice
Participants will practice talking about issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an emotionally supportive space
Participants will receive consultation on creating a welcoming, affirming, and responsive environment for BIPOC colleagues
Participants will collaborate on effective strategies to address diversity, equity, and inclusion-related challenges

This session builds on the skills and lessons learned at previous Building Energy conference sessions around anti-racism content, but will be a NEW approach and tools to incorporate at your place of business.

Session Format Details
An introduction to anti-racism theory and ground rules for communication given by facilitators. Followed by breakout group work, including role-playing and small group discussions. At the conclusion of the session, participants will have an opportunity to share back and reflect on their experiences and what they hope to bring back to their companies and the rest of the NESEA community.

ARAG and the professional facilitators are committed to making this the best session it can be for our audience. We acknowledge that more work still needs to be done to design the session and customize it for the conference. This session addresses NESEA’s strategic priority to “embrace the work of anti-racism and become more just and equitable.” We, NESEA members, need to be leaders in our ever-expanding field of building professionals. This session is an opportunity for conference attendees and NESEA members to ground challenging and essential conversations in NESEA’s vision and core values of “envision[ing] a vibrant and resilient built environment that supports climate justice and equity.”
