Proposed Session Description
Climate-related outages are on the rise, and businesses are increasingly seeking more resilient energy systems. Clean-energy microgrids have emerged as a viable solution, with the added benefit of being environmentally sustainable. Given the uptick in climate policy as well as EV and clean-energy regulations, businesses must adapt or risk obsolescence. This session will illustrate the benefits of microgrid systems and highlight the path to energy resilience through current real-world examples.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Energy security, which should be a basic right, poses a significant challenge that our economy must overcome collaboratively. Clean energy technologies, revolutionary and highly impactful as they may be, are also typically expensive and involve large up-front capital requirement, making them inaccessible to several industries and customers. The session aims to highlight the importance of democratizing access to clean energy technology and sheds light on some ways this can be achieved, including having energy companies shoulder the initial financial burden by providing customers the option of 100% financing for their projects (with the help of private equity investments). Further, the process of transitioning energy systems can be complex and face several hurdles that delay project development cycles. This session will highlight the importance of simplifying the process as much as possible so it ceases to be a deterrent to customers looking to switch to renewable energy systems.
Learning Objectives
Why decentralized energy systems are the solution to the grid resilience problem in the face of increasing climate related catastrophic events. The session will explore what clean energy microgrids are, their various components, and how they work to support the US electric grid in demand management.
The environmental, operational, and economic benefits of clean energy microgrid systems, and how they can be integrated into daily facility operations to maximize efficiency.
State and federal benefits, incentives, and tax credits available to businesses interested in transitioning to clean energy, and how commercial and industrial customers can utilize them.
How microgrids differ from standalone solar or other standalone distributed energy resources. This session will highlight the true value of resilience a microgrid system provides.

Full Description
In the face of increasing climate-related weather events, businesses are experiencing an increased and urgent need for environmentally conscious and resilient energy systems. Facilities grapple with a plethora of pressing challenges beyond the need to switch to more environmentally sustainable business practices. From a business operations perspective, companies are also grappling with a pressing need for increased energy resilience to ensure uninterrupted operations and protect against revenue loss. Further, the cost to stay powered by the utility is steadily climbing the more unreliable the utility's power supply gets. While increasing resilience is key, rising energy prices have motivated companies to seek energy independence by installing systems that provide both increased resiliency and more affordable power at their sites. Distributed generation holds the answer to the energy resilience piece of the equation by reducing the reliance on a vulnerable utility-scale power grid. Microgrids, often consisting of solar, battery storage and backup generation, can reduce a facility's reliance on the vulnerable grid, leading to lower electricity bills and reduced environmental impact. They provide facilities with the ability to generate, store, and manage their energy, thereby increasing reliability during outages and ensuring continuous operation, even when the main grid is compromised. A microgrid’s benefits are trifold - cleaner, cheaper and more reliable energy. By harnessing the power of these clean energy systems, facilities can not only fortify their resilience against climate change and decrease their overall energy costs, but also contribute to a more sustainable energy future. This triple benefit of sustainability, reliability, and cost savings positions microgrids as a strategic choice for facilities looking to thrive in the face of a changing climate. With an uptick in the volume and scale of legislative policies intended to support clean energy adoption and vehicle electrification to combat climate change, businesses need to adapt or risk obsolescence. This session will illustrate why it is imperative businesses begin the switch to clean and resilient energy today. The session will also explore the latest clean-energy technologies available today, and highlight a roadmap to how energy resilience can be achieved through real-world examples of systems that exist today.
