Proposed Session Description
This session will review the RI Energy 2022 ASHP Case Study.
We performed 20 site visits of 2021 ASHP installations. performed Manual J load calculations and fuel bull analysis before and after the ASHP installation.
Properly weatherized existing homes were found to use less than half the heat of the installed heating system, with most or all heating being provided by ASHPs.
Discussion to include: proper load calculations, existing heating system design, ASHP operation modes observed,
Diversity and Inclusiveness
The RI Energy weatherization (wz) programs focus on providing services to the low-income population.
The biggest challenge is funding to solve the building code violations before wz can be performed.
CLEAResult LLC actively works with the RI Energy program staff to find solutions to the former, so we can provide the latter.
Learning Objectives
Trust a conservative load calculation
Size the ASHP correctly
ASHPs must deliver comfort and heating/cooling capacity with proper distribution of conditioned air into all the conditioned space.
Explain why modern ASHPs MAINTAIN indoor temperature cheaper than they will as they try to RECOVER from on/off operation.

Comments about your speaker roster
I have been working in EE since the first oil embargo in 1975, I just never bothered to talk about it when oil was cheap.
I have run weatherization crews, an insulation and solar company, my own H&C business, worked in oil and propane industry, residential and commercial work.
With very few buildings identical, the HVAC systems need to be better matched to the heating and cooling loads and the interior space to provide comfort and economy.
If the customer is comfortable, they will be "better stewards" of the environment.
I believe I can deliver this message accurately, as I live with all of this equipment.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
This session will provide a positive message about decarbonization and energy efficiency in existing or new construction.
When the building loads are decreased, more energy efficient equipment can meet them.

Full Description
As the need to reduce GHG production and improve energy efficiency becomes more accepted, proper system design and sizing is needed to deliver comfort and economy, or homeowners will use ASHPs for efficient cooling and mild weather heating only. Modern properly sized ASHPs can deliver both of these features and heat to 90% of the winter or more.
