Boston 2023 Areas of Focus

Proposed Session Description
Electrification of existing commercial building stock is widely recognized as a “must do” to address climate change. Eversource has supported approximately 60 electrification scoping studies to date and has gained valuable insight into electrification of existing buildings in the process. Building requirements to support electrified HVAC are vastly different from traditional fossil fuel-fired equipment. Diversity in approaches is required due to unique customer priorities and site conditions.
Learning Objectives
Identify potential hurdles to implementation, and strategies for overcoming these potential obstacles, particularly for older buildings with end-of-life equipment.
Merits of “ventilation-first” and “phased-electrification” strategies to maximize GHG reduction per dollar spent for customers.
Understand limitations of existing commercially available equipment for use in retrofit applications, and best strategies to address.
Understand resources that are available to customers under the Mass Save framework for customers interested in pursuing electrification of their facilities.

Full Description
There is surging interest in electrification, in particular for older municipal buildings and schools. There has also been a recent increase in interest for geothermal systems for smaller scale projects, driven in part by Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) tax credits available. Furthermore, BERDO 2.0 compliance is driving clients to explore electrification to mitigate emissions. This session will highlight lessons learned to date in order to develop viable strategies for customers to electrify their facilities. Case studies of projects moving toward implementation will be presented. It will also address current challenges for this market segment and limitations of equipment available on the market. Opportunities for “plug and play” solutions are more limited for existing buildings, which often require significant upgrades to electrify in an efficient manner.
