Proposer Additional Info
Alexandra Gadawski WELL AP, LEED AP BD+C is an architect and sustainability leader at HMFH Architects, where her passion for building performance and knowledge of lighting design has made her crucial to projects at every stage. Providing integral support to project teams, Ms. Gadawski uses her skillsets to push sustainable initiatives and assist in problem solving for complex designs. Her commitment to promoting student wellness is reflected in her daylight and energy modelling, as well as her research into healthy material options and embodied carbon. With a background in energy consumption and voluntary building standards, Ms. Gadawski holds a Master of Science in Environmental Design of Buildings from Cardiff University in Wales and a Master of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Proposed Session Description
Designing a net zero energy building can seem intimidating, but it is possible now. The design of an occupied net positive energy primary school, and a net zero energy high school in design development will be used as case studies. Balancing net zero energy goals with material health and embodied carbon considerations will be discussed. Schools are an ideal testing ground of net zero energy strategies, as they are created on tight timelines and budgets. Strategies implemented on these projects are accessible and can be a model for increasing the scale of net zero energy adoption as standard design practice.
Why is this session important?
With limited amount of time to impact climate change, designers must work with urgency to introduce net zero energy design in all our buildings. As professionals, we need to understand the current barriers, methods for solving these issues, and avenues for advocacy This session will discuss what is achievable now and how current funding opportunities can support projects. Participants will leave with concrete information to apply on current projects.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
There is no true sustainability without equity. Public schools are a community resource open to all and can serve as a demonstration of a community’s values and goals. To create a just and sustainable future we need accessible and affordable solutions that can be applied to all building types. Public schools are often constructed on a tight timeline with modest budgets. Solutions that can be implemented on these projects have broad applicability and can serve as a model for the adoption of net zero energy design.
Learning Objectives
Examine data on embodied carbon, operational carbon, and material health to balance these considerations to create low impact, healthy buildings.
Recognize opportunities to reduce embodied and operational carbon during all design phases from feasibility to construction documents.
Implement a visioning charette, set concrete targets, determine tracking metrics, and convey goals to clients and the project team.
Understand the life cycle cost analysis of a net zero energy building and describe available funding mechanisms for net zero energy buildings.

Jaime McGavin, LEED AP BD+C is an architectural designer at HMFH Architects, an educational design firm based in Cambridge, MA. With nine years of experience and a focus on healthy, sustainable design, she advances initiatives within the firm to help projects achieve high performance standards, most recently developing a workflow to analyze the carbon impact of HMFH buildings using Tally and working toward a net-zero energy goal for the new Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School project. Ms. McGavin holds a B.S. in Architecture and a M. Arch. from Roger Williams University. Caitlin Osepchuk AIA is an architect and Associate at HMFH, where her clear communication skills, close attention to detail, and hands-on engagement are instrumental to the success of significant school projects. Her practice focuses on the design of educational spaces that are innovative, sustainable and prioritize student well-being. This is exemplified in her most recent role as Project Architect for the new Fales Elementary School, which sets a precedent for energy-efficient design as the first net-positive energy public school in New England. A natural, thoughtful leader, Ms. Osepchuk recently served as the Young Architects Regional Director (YARD) for AIA New England, where she was a resource and mentor for young architects across the region and holds a Masters in Architecture from Roger Williams University.
