Proposed Session Description
The Passive House building certification standard has set a high benchmark for low-energy buildings known widely as the most rigorous energy efficiency standard currently available. Attendees will hear more about the PH standard, specifically how balanced ventilation is applied in a cold climate at a large scale and how commissioning plays a key role in this process. This discussion will draw from the experiences of commissioning ERV/HRV systems in PH projects and the various execution paths on multifamily and commercial buildings. SWA presenters will explore their ‘tales from the trenches experiences and share lessons learned stemming from common construction issues.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
The project case studies included in the presentation consist of the largest affordable multifamily passive housing developments in the world. These projects have wide-reaching impacts on the communities they serve and represent excellent-quality construction. Balanced ventilation provides fresh filtered air to each apartment and is a fundamental quality of a passive house building. Ventilation promotes healthy indoor air quality in some of the most polluted communities in the country.
Learning Objectives
1. Discuss common passive house ventilation system designs, layouts, and components pertaining to the performance and field installations.
2. Demonstrate through examples common problem areas related to the implementation of high-performance ventilation systems.
3. Identify ways to curb potential project shortfalls and recommendations based on lessons learned.
4. Understand the passive house certification criteria and the actual performance necessary for ventilation systems to be within compliance.

Full Description
The audience will be challenged to think differently about standard ventilation shortcomings and how the codes of the future may push for more balanced and efficient solutions to ventilation issues. As the Passive House standard is becoming adopted into stretch codes we can expect more passive buildings in the future and correctly functioning ventilation is a critical pillar of the standard.
