Proposed Session Description
We will present tales from the trenches for ventilation approaches within the context of the Passive House building certification standard. This standard has set a high benchmark for low-energy buildings and is widely known as the most rigorous energy efficiency standard currently available. This discussion will draw from the experiences of commissioning ERV/HRV system on Passive House projects and demonstrate the various execution paths on multifamily and commercial buildings across NYC.
Why is this session important?
This session is critical to informing the wider high-performance community about the issues posed by new, unproven systems and design integration. SWA has been on the cutting edge of commissioning new technologies and design approaches that meet stringent energy reduction requirements. We will share experiences commissioning the most significant passive house projects in North America and specific to NYC. We intend this to be a continuation of our presentation at Building Energy Boston which will build on the latest and greatest data and problem-solving approaches. We have fresh content and data to build on the past presentation and share new insights into construction realities. We will conclude with our best recommendations for successful passive house project delivery.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
The presentation's content will focus on large-scale multifamily affordable housing developments in historically underserved communities around NYC. Passive house building has an emphasis on quality and improved occupant comfort and is a method of providing high-quality housing to those in need.
Learning Objectives
Discuss common passive house ventilation system designs, layouts, and components pertaining to the performance and field installations.
Demonstrate through examples common problem areas related to the implementation of high-performance ventilation systems.
Recommend ways to design for best ventilation performance based upon lessons learned.
Describe the Passive House certification criteria and the actual performance necessary for ventilation systems to be within compliance.
