Rachel led the development of the Impact of MoBIUS Real-Time Energy Management Service report (https://www.brightpower.com/impact-of-mobius-real-time-energy-management-service/), which was published in the summer of 2020. Rachel collects, analyzes, interprets, and visualizes building and consumption data. She streamlines data reporting and enhances data sharing capabilities. As a result, engineering teams and external clients alike gain valuable insights about the impact of Bright Power's services to reduce energy and water consumption. Rachel also is a Clean Energy Leadership Institute (CELI) fellow, part of a passionate community dedicated to building an equitable, decarbonized, and resilient energy ecosystem.
Proposed Session Description
Optimizing existing buildings to have more effective and efficient systems and operations can yield big results as building owners and operators look to decrease their carbon emissions in preparation for complying with NYC’s Local Law 97. To understand how real-time energy management (RTEM) and ongoing operations support can impact a building’s operations, Bright Power analyzed data from 15 multifamily and commercial buildings engaged in RTEM for a full year and compared that to data from 100 control buildings that were not engaged in a RTEM service (but were benchmarking their buildings). In this session, you will dive into the data to see how these two sets of buildings compared and learn how RTEM with ongoing analysis of utility data can help buildings reduce carbon emissions, energy costs, and consumption. The research we will explore in this session was generously funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
Why is this session important?
With LL97 compliance looming, building owners and operators are looking for low cost ways to reduce carbon emissions while they plan for more capital-intensive projects needed to meet the lower limits set for 2030 compliance. However, until now, there has been a lack of accessible data to help prove that ongoing real-time energy management and operational support can move the needle. This session will break down that barrier by arming sustainability professionals with the data they need to prove this point.

Maybe - I like the idea of presenting information on the study they performed. I like how the study was funded by and likely reviewed by NYSERDA - that adds a level of validity to this groups. However I would prefer to bring some other voices into the discussion. Perhaps bring in a building owner/manager on how these technologies were applied, what challenges were experienced, etc.

Yes. This is the type of hand-on know and innovative technologies/deep dive that the industry and attendees need to see to get us to 40x30 while helping with LL97 compliance. Plus, we are having a young female professional in her own right presenting which is a great representation for women in an industry that is vastly male dominated!

ROUND 1 DISCUSSION: w/local 97, these analytics are becoming more and more necessary. Proposal comparing buildings w/withou real time management. Maybe points: This is only one company represented: it would be good to get other perspectives. Suggestion: owner-manager. Also suggestion, from Jodi: to make sure the story of RT as a tool is told.

Susan Farber Mon, 05/24/2021 - 12:01 pm

ROUND 2 DISCUSSION: [Awaiting Fatou's Round 2 notes.] Jeannine says owner perspective could probably be included. Not directly tied to Local Law 97. Maybe good to emphasize broader benefits, not just on NYSERDA, since they're restructuring their program. Want to try to get owner's perspective.

Fatou Jabbie Mon, 05/24/2021 - 12:20 pm

Spoke with the BrightPower team, (Rachael, Matthew, and Bestsy). Shared with them that they shoud add a different perspective of a building owner/manager perhaps on how these technologies were applied, what challenges were experienced, etc.
I learned that MoBIUS in an internal BrightPower RTEM on-going service, which makes it even more important to have a owner/manager perpetive who was involved in having their building data integrated and the value perhaps how their energy savings are more predictable in  when compared to pre-RTEM.
They will include an overview/story of RTEM as a tool and the difference and/or how it compliments BMS and BAS systems.
The can deliver the session with Q&A in 60mins.

It was interesting that Rachel the presenter, did not ansswer any of my questions during this meeting but rather Matthew Murphey, Manager of MoBIUS did.

I would say yes for this session.  I said NO to pre-recorded owner/manager participation, as it will be more valuable for have them present to provide their insights and also for Q&A. They all AGREED.
I will curate this session and make sure that the input shared is integrated on the final delivery

Diversity and Inclusiveness
Rachel is a rising female leader in sustainability. She is a young professional with under ten years of experience. Providing young female-identifying sustainability professionals with examples of their peers in the space is critical in getting more women in the field and fostering a collaborative sisterhood in sustainability.
Learning Objectives
Understand what real-time energy management is and how it differs from annual energy benchmarking.
Explain and understand how buildings with RTEM consume less energy over time compared to buildings without RTEM.
Explain and understand why energy savings are more predictable in RTEM buildings compared to buildings without RTEM.
Explain and understand how RTEM results in less volatile energy consumption compared to buildings without RTEM.

Comments about your speaker roster
Rachel will be the lead presenter, however we would like to have Michael Jarrett, Director of Data Operations, and Matthew Murphey, Manager of MoBIUS, on hand for the Q&A portion should attendees have technical questions about the set up of MoBIUS and RTEM. That said, Rachel would be the lead for the presentation and Q&A and Michael and Matthew would only be there for the Q&A portion.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
While we want to keep this accessible for anyone new to RTEM, we can increase the level of this session to be more technical based on the guidance of the content committee. We will also give attendees access to a pdf with the full report’s findings.
