For decades the AEC industry’s efforts to reduce its carbon emissions have been focused squarely on building operations such as heating, cooling, and electricity use. In recent years the importance of a building’s embodied carbon (the carbon emissions required to produce, transport, and install the materials that constitute the building itself) has been fully recognized. With concrete being the most prevalent construction material and more governments, developers, and AEC industry groups committing to reduce the embodied carbon of their building stock every day, the concrete industry must be ready to respond with practical knowledge and innovation. This presentation aims to arm attendees with a working knowledge of what embodied carbon is, how it is calculated for concrete, and with a set of practical strategies for its reduction which can be implemented on almost any project. Ultimately we will show how two key players – the engineer and the ready-mix supplier – can be the unlikely champions of a low carbon future.

There are many leverage points that can be pulled on a project, quite easily, to achieve significant embodied carbon reductions. Many of these opportunities are not new technologies - but just need the right timing and tools. We are hoping that participants will walk away understanding how to better collaborate with their suppliers and engineers on projects to deliver low embodied carbon design. It doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming to make a real impact.
