Proposed Session Description
Heat pumps are an important tool for decarbonization, but how do energy efficiency programs compare one heat pump to another? The answer led one utility to overhaul their minimum HVAC system requirements. Based on information they collected from actual home comparisons, an inverter system saved approximately 20% over a 2-stage system “apples-to-apples” on utility bills and energy usage. This session explains how technology can meet policy to save energy, money, and the planet.
Why is this session important?
The big question of how energy efficiency program requirements influence the products that manufacturers bring to market can be a mutually beneficial amplification of the technology that uses the least overall energy and creates the least emissions.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
We will aim to represent DEI with both our speakers and content. Improving the effectiveness of utility rebate programs and removing barriers for mass marketability is critical wherever cost is concerned, disproportionately so for LMI communities and customers.
Learning Objectives
Understand the common metrics for HVAC equipment used by energy efficiency programs as minimum requirements for qualification.
Summarize the basic compressor technology common to all HVAC manufacturers.
Identify the effect of compressor type on utility bills and energy usage.
Explain how energy efficiency programs and manufacturers can cooperate to incentivize and proliferate the heat pump compressor technology that uses the least overall energy and creates the least emissions, while saving building occupants money and keeping them comfortable through the extreme outdoor temperatures caused by climate change.
