Proposed Session Description
Why Do Healthier Materials Still Seem So Hard - And How to Fix That If your goal is to drive the market toward healthier materials, top ten lists and quick hacks are not going to do it. Based on a decade of work in healthier materials, this session will address the question of why we as an industry keep failing to make healthier building products the norm. The short answer is that collectively, our processes for specifying, purchasing, and installing products must change. You won’t like all the steps, and some changes will be hard. Time and again, though, NESEA members have taken the lead and solved daunting systemic problems (e.g. renewables, energy efficiency, and embodied carbon). Installing healthier products enhances social justice and improves worker, occupant, and community health. Transitioning to healthier materials requires collaboration across firms so that manufacturers feel the pressure of a clear, unified request. As practitioners, we need to change in order to be more effective. Sharpen your pitchfork. This is a call to action.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our submission is diverse in terms of gender (2 females and 2 males) and includes 1 emerging professional. Also, the issue of healthier materials directly address social justice. We leverage the Living Building Challenge's Materials Red List, which is heavily weighted toward chemicals of concern that do not typically have direct impact on building occupants, but rather primarily affect fence-line communities, facility workers, and installers.
Learning Objectives
Establish realistic, scalable, measurable healthier materials goals, and a plan to put them into action.
Identify pitfalls that have prevented other teams from succeeding
Explain the benefit of a unified, non-custom, only slightly tailored approach to healthier materials
Feel a call to action, have a network of support to begin implementation immediately and sustainably.

Comments about your speaker roster
Right now, we envision the lineup as all IES staff. However, we could explore bringing in some other voices. For example, maybe Jesse Thompson, lead architect for The Ecology School or Carolyn Day from Perkins Eastman.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
We are super excited to explore this concept. We would not present a session like this at any other conference, but we think the NESEA community is positioned and equipped for this conversation.

Full Description
This session is important because there are real and perceived barriers that prevent individuals and firms from taking decisive action. This paralysis has real consequences in terms of human health and social justice.
