Proposed Session Description
Smart homes, remote home monitoring, HVAC connected to your cell phone: As building gets more advanced, more and more data is collected about homes, occupants, and how they live. Contractors, architects, utilities, and more all have reasons to collect data about their customers and projects, but there are a number of downsides to this more is better philosophy. Understanding what data to collect and how to protect it is not something that most of us are prepared for, but it can be a big deal. The differences between privacy and security will be explained, as well as how data has been used in the past and may be used in the future.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Data collection is not neutral, and the data stored and collected by these stakeholders has the potential to be used to unfairly impact some groups more than others.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to describe what types of information are being collected about customers and buildings, and define some of the threats inherent to the collection of data.

Full Description
There is another dimension to the built world that we try to see through data. Much of it can be used as personably identifiable information (PII). Some of it can be be used or subpoenaed in lawsuits, and some of it can even be used for evidence of when crimes have taken place. Collecting and storing this information is a responsibility that needs to be understood.
