Proposed Session Description
Combined Heat and Power - CHP – sold as a way to deliver ‘free’ electricity while providing the core functions of space and domestic water heating, has an important role to play in the transition to de-carbonize our buildings.
This technology first showed up in New England over 80 years ago, and has been progressively moving towards smaller applications suitable for multi-family housing. Many - maybe most - of these installations were incentivized by rate-payer funded energy efficiency programs. Under these programs, the system operation is measured and evaluated. Sounds good - so what is the issue? Load coordination.
New Ecology has uncovered problems in how CHP, and their backup boiler systems, collaborate to satisfy a building's load. This problem goes unnoticed because no no-one collects the data that can tell this story. We do.
We will share and interpret our data to illustrate what poor coordination looks like, what it costs in dollars and carbon, the reasons behind it, and how it can be improved.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our presentation is focused on work done in affordable multifamily housing, the residents of which are largely non-white.
Learning Objectives
Understand the overall issue.
Quick review of CHP systems and how they work with central boiler systems.
Understand what data is needed, and how it is obtained and analyzed.
Understand the potential impact in terms of costs and carbon.
Has this session been presented before?
No
Target Audiences Level of Expertise
Level 2 - Some prior knowledge helpful.
Session Format Details
Not set. We could are thinking a combination of presentation, of data and 1-2 case studies, and "interview" with building facility managers with long experience with CHP.
Recommended Length
60-minute session

Comments about your speaker roster
Not finalized. May include another engineer. May invite a facility director to convey operational issues directly - more interview, discussion, fewer slides. Jonah is a very engaging speaker - he has been instructing at local energy/building certificate programs and community colleges for years.

Full Description
In our race to decarbonize, system coordination is something that can produce and maintain efficiencies now, while the electrification transition continues over a longer timeline. What is happening in CHP buildings? What are the operational challenges? How big of a carbon issue might CHP/boiler coordination be, in multi-family and (perhaps) other buildings? What data and process is needed to evaluate and maintain coordination?
