Proposed Session Description
In the face of seemingly insurmountable odds that the climate crisis is a foregone conclusion (it's not!), why do industry professionals continue to fight the battles to fill the world with new high performance buildings and deep energy retrofits? How do small companies that are only building a couple homes at a time manage the immense stress and maintain a healthy professional and personal balanced wellbeing?
What keeps these climate crisis warriors sane on a daily, monthly, yearly basis? For professionals tackling the larger multi-family projects, how do they retain focus and push through longer project schedules with the same enthusiasm they started the project with.
The “solutions” could be industry related or not. Maybe some presenters find continuing education as vehicle to stay encouraged by the latest and greatest industry advances. Presenters could share quick techniques and or resources for yoga, meditation, charitable organization volunteering connections, etc.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
We need to encourage people to join the profession. I see the opposite happening. We certainly aren't going to increase the industry's diversity if people are leaving faster than they are joining / staying!
Learning Objectives
Attendees will learn industry related daily, weekly, monthly and yearly tips to stay engaged, sharp and motivated to continue to push for excellence; i.e. continuing education tips, sources for industry related inspiration (certain blogs, periodicals), general work habits (taking "scribble" breaks, the Pomodoro technique), etc.
Attendees will learn basic non-industry related mental health techniques like meditation, journaling prompts, and other activities recommended by the panelists.
Attendees will learn about industry and community resources to help stay positive and motivated; i.e. Habitat for Humanity or other non-profit volunteering, mentoring younger professionals, etc.
Attendees will hear motivating stories to reflect on as a means to inspire their own proactive methods of enthusiasm.

Session Format Details
I think this session may be more appropriate for a lunch style "klatsch". The panelists could be leaders within our industry, a meditation coach, a psychologist and or other mental health experts. If it is just industry professionals, I think it would be interesting to get panelists at different stages of their career so there can be more direct messaging with anyone in attendance. The International Living Future Institute Un-conference has several of these types of sessions that could be used as a precedent and or resource for how to conduct such a session.

I do not have any specific speakers in mind. The NESEA review board would narrow and refine this proposal idea and then search for the appropriate panelists.

Full Description
We have seen the toll that Covid-19 has taken on the front line health workers. It is no secret that the architecture and construction industry is stressful. The industry has historically been hit hard during economic corrections. Increasingly alarming climate crisis data can feel overwhelming. And now Covid-19 is adding yet another burden to certain sectors of our industry. Students are discouraged from entering the industry. Mid-career professionals are making career switches for less stressful, more predictable greener pastures. The remaining professionals are burning out at a record pace. Our industry is on the front line of the climate crisis, and we need to provide ourselves the tools to stay encouraged, stay engaged, and stay active in the fight that we will ultimately win!
