Proposed Session Description
Adopting circular economy approaches in a high growth, high-waste sector like the built environment presents a tremendous opportunity for businesses, governments and cities to minimize structural waste and thus realize greater value from built environment assets. It is time to reshape our urban future and move from principles to practices. During the session, visionary practitioners will provide their perspectives on partnerships are key to understanding and solving tomorrow’s challenges and why we must build back circular through cases and research. We must take innovative measure to source ideas for how we build back circular to explore and develop a future model. Therefore, this session will also bring into focus how we can work faster and smarter to bolster the circular economy thinking in buildings. In November 2020 the Open Innovation Call – Build Back Circular – was launched with the aim at connecting American companies or organizations, that have a challenge within the built industry, to be matched up with Nordic companies that have expertise and know-how within circular construction. At the session, you will hear about the co-creation partnership between Columbia University, BLOXHUB and a range of Nordic companies and be the first to be introduced to the concrete solutions and understand how local challenges, co-creation and partnerships are the new green.
Why is this session important?
Hundreds of thousands of buildings in the North East US are facing a retrofit and it creates a burning platform to rethink the recovery potential for a large number of resources from buildings. Selective demolition plays an important role in this recovery, and it establishes circular value chains as it allows for reuse and high-level recycling of building materials. Although recent decades have seen many improvements in the energy efficiency of buildings and the liveability of cities, the built environment we live in today continues to be designed around the linear ‘take-make-dispose’ model, in which materials are sourced, used and then disposed of as waste. This approach results in significant structural waste and has contributed to making the built environment one of the world’s largest consumers of resources and raw materials, and a major producer of waste and carbon emissions.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
This session includes female speakers, and we aim to increase the diversity in the speaker spot(s) left for solution pitches.
Learning Objectives
The greatest opportunities are realized when circular economy is applied to strategic decision making. Examples of key strategic focus areas will be presented.
Practical examples of scalable circular construction projects and how the project brings together over 60 different companies across the entire value chain.
Co-creation and challenges - massive driver of industry innovation. How it’s done, why it should be done more and the outcome of the collaboration.
Full-speed pitch: Nordic solutions and technologies applied on Columbia University. How different companies pitches answers to the question of why and how to build circular.
