We may be on the threshold of a dramatic re-think in electricity distribution. Stakeholder processes in Rhode Island’s Power Sector Transformation and New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision are leading the nation in revising the role of utility companies. In changing the way utilities are structured and paid, these efforts promise to align the priorities of utilities with those of consumer, environmental and distributed generation advocates, while changing the way producers and consumers of energy and energy services transact with each other. These reforms should create huge opportunities for innovation, distributed energy resources, and efficiency. Leaders of the transformative process in both states will share their perspectives on current developments and on expected outcomes.
