Proposed Session Description
In 2021, HPD and NYSERDA launched a joint $24 million pilot - giving direct grants to HPD Preservation projects to (holistically) electrify hot water, space heating or both. This was possible by relying on HPD's rigorous oversight paired with dedicated Technical Assistance (Steven Winter Associates and Taitem Engineering was selected). By Fall 2022, we will have our first cohort (nearly 175 housing units) under construction and be in the design stages with a second cohort. We will present 2 case studies. HPD, Taitem, SWA, NYSERDA and possibly a building owner/ architect will speak about the process of selecting appropriate projects and optimizing the design - and will share the numerous resources and tools that have been created.
Why is this session important?
Electrification is challenging in NYC - and is even more challenging for Affordable Housing. This team is working to resolve this problem from within - and ensure that all of the electrification we do is beneficial. To achieive this, we work very closely together on every project to ensure optimal outcomes and set precedents for future electrification of NYC's affordable housing stock - as well as creating equitable and safe electrification policies and practices. We will present 2 different case studies that have different challenges and discuss how we are handling them. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/hpd/services-and-information/hpd-nyserda-retrofit-electrification-pilot.page

Round 1: yesExcellent "gap" discussion. So glad to see this program/approach and eager to hear of the process and what has come from this endeavor. Good panele, nce synergistic opportunity.

Round 1: YesReally interested to see this program presented. How are they addressing rising costs and interest rates with the second cohort? Great group and really interesting pilot.

Yes - great panel, very focused and defined on a highly visible topic of electrification.  Will be a good status check on a NYSERDA/HPD program to gauge successes and challenges and case studies will be very useful.  Would like to hear thoughts on what was learned to be able to scale electrification for affordable housing.

Round 2: YESGroup proposed has a great case to make about the feasibility and cost concerns (both in construction and operational costs) around electrification of existing buildings. They plan to present at least one case study from the electrification pilot round 1 and discuss how they screened HPD projects for participation, how they took into account end-user (tenant and owner) costs to keep energy cost burdens low, and best practices from round 1 as they move into round 2. Potential agenda:Pilot structure and collaborationRealities of electrificationID tools neededTool run-throughPanelThis group will likely need a moderator. Short group presentation, panel discussion, and audience Q&A. I would be happy to curate and moderate this session.

R2 Discussion:Panel with speakers from multiple companies: structure would be presentation from different speakers, running through tools, and panel Q&A. Will incorporate cost-gap (pilot funded with 'free money'.) If this does get combinened with HCR, we'd lose some about the tools - and that's the most interesting piece.

Comments about your speaker roster
We may have additional members of the team joining but not speaking (Ian Shapiro from Taitem)
Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
We want it to be a unique format rather than just talking, but haven't figured out exactly what this will look like. We plan to demo some of our screening tools and will share our technical guidance - but will also walk through some case studies of projects we are working on. Can do this in a workshop or interactive format.
