Proposed Session Description
Collaboration is essential for the success of decarbonization projects in the built environment and requires the cooperation of different stakeholders with different areas of expertise and resources. It is critical to share resources and knowledge among stakeholders from various industry sectors. This session will bring together different perspectives from across the industry to discuss the challenges and complexities encountered by project teams on the path to net zero.
Why is this session important?
It is critical to share resources and knowledge among stakeholders from various industry sectors. A critical piece of this information exchange is sharing the challenges faced during the planning and implementation of decarbonization projects. This session is important because it aims to foster collaboration and conversation between key stakeholders in decarbonization projects.

YES. I think this would make a compelling presentation, and would highly benefit from a success story / example.

Danielle Donnelly Mon, 05/22/2023 - 1:40 pm

Round 1: YesThe title maybe needs a rewrite since there is no evidence of intra-industry collaboration in the submission, but the overal topic is compelling and the use of case studies and sharing of best practices aligns with this conference's committment to ground sessions in real-world applications.

Ben Sachs-Hamilton Thu, 05/25/2023 - 9:20 am

Round 1 discussion: "Multi-industry" may need to be reworked. Proposal focused on stakeholders from the same industry.

Michaela Boren… Mon, 06/12/2023 - 4:53 pm

Round 2: MAYBE - Met with Kailash and Dani from Consigli. General Take-Away: Session is about different perspectives on decarbonization but weak on the collaboration. It is more "This is how we tackled this project, addressed the problems, made it successful and let’s start a conversation". Curator will have to double-check/follow-up a number of things if this pushes through.  Project: 345 Hudson Street - Empire Building Challenge - NOT a completed project (https://www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Programs/Empire-Building-Challenge/Empir…). Speakers will cover the journey from last year to October. No solid construction plan yet. Sill in subcontracting and planning. However, part of the floor work has started. Equipment from Europe (water-source heat pumps) recently got delivered. Tenant work has already started (Phase 1). Infrastructure work still in the design/discussion process (focusing on the roof now). Speakers: 4 or 5 - Points of View: Construction, Engineering, Owner, and Manufacturer1. Kailash - Consigli (Director of Energy) – Confirmed - Represents construction POV 2. Ben - Hines (VP of Construction) - Confirmed - Represents owners POV3.  Molly - JB&B (Director of Carbon) - Not available for conference but may send someone from their team 4. Kelley from Gil-Bar (Sales Engineer) OR Highmark representative - Not confirmed - Represents manufacturer POV  (note that these 2 companies are not signed on yet/not yet in contract but have been brought in at every stage of the conversation. Should know by October who gets signed on. Don't know if they will be able to talk about materials for the project/they can talk about another project)Session Format: 4 or 5 questions and speakers will discuss/chat through it (and will show photos) Session Length: They are good with 60 minutes. Don't feel the need for 90 minutes.Title: Very open to changing the title. They did a lot of back and forth on it. (During the meeting, came up with "Stakeholder Perspectives on Decarbonization")Other projects the proposers said they can talk about: Williams Project and NYU project from a campus perspective (however, they haven't gotten the job yet)

Learning Objectives
Understand the importance of collaboration in achieving decarbonization goals: Participants should be able to articulate the ways in which decarbonization requires coordinated efforts across different sectors and stakeholders, and the risks of pursuing decarbonization in isolation.
Evaluate barriers to collaboration and potential solutions: Participants should be able to recognize the obstacles to collaboration in decarbonization efforts, such as conflicting interests, insufficient funding, and political opposition, and consider strategies for overcoming these challenges.
Identify the key challenges to decarbonizing the building sector, including technological, economic, and policy barriers.
Understand the role of stakeholders in driving building decarbonization, including building owners, developers, engineers, construction managers, and manufacturers.
