Tools for Measuring Embodied Carbon

Round 2: Yes!At first, I wasn't entirely sure that this session would be strong enough, but after speaking with Zoe I am more than confident that this will be a great session for the conference. My biggest question going into this proposal was surrounding the material. Here is a breakdown based on our discussion:1. Background on LCA/WBLCA and why it is important 2. Overview of Building Emissions Accounting for Materials (BEAM) Estimator3. Overview of Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) Tool. Might have someone from the development of the tool attend as an additional speaker.4. Overview of Operational and Embodied carbon Emissions Estimator (OCEC) BETA. Might have Skylar Swinford to assist or help present as well.4. PHPP Embodied Carbon PHribbon - Using a BP/MAP project data as a case study.6. Cove.tool Embodied Carbon - Using a BP/MAP project as a case study and tool comparison. Now, this is a lot of material and there are still a lot of moving parts. However, Sara Bayer has confirmed that she will be able to co-host the session with Zoe and show how she has used LCA tools in her workflow at MAP. As for the other two potential speakers this will need to be confirmed. 60 minutes would be fine but might require some cutting of material so I would recommend this session to be increased to 90.This session I feel is needed, and Zoe wanted to make it clear that it will be for all professionals attending, not just those carrying out the analysis. Apart from going over which tools to use and when and what differences there are between them, this session will talk about NYSERDA funding and benefits for all stakeholders. As a final note, this session is a form of continued education as there was a previous session in 2021, "Delicate Balance: Weighing Embodied vs Operation Carbon in High-Performance Design" that Carmel Pratt (BP) and Sara Bayer presented together. The challenges that I see are mainly finding the best way to make this session informative but engaging. With the number of tools that could potentially be presented, even 90 minutes feels like a short amount of time. It will be critical for this session's success to find a way to keep everyone's interest while still providing enough information on each tool. Other than that, I think that just Zoe and Sara would be perfect for the session, but I do think if the other two speakers can confirm it would improve the session. As for continued questions, I am still just wondering what the content will look like. At the time of my talk with Zoe, Sara had not been confirmed yet, so I did not hear what the case studies are or ask any questions about them. With some more work I feel this will be a great and important session for the conference.
YES - a sustainabiltiy
YES - a sustainabiltiy consultant's breakdown of tools on EC would be extremely valuable, especially with project experience. I might have a slight bias because I would be the "MAP" she is referring to in this proposal. I know of the projects and goals she is referring to so I can say that these are with our NYSERDA EArly Phase BoE grants, and we are working on these things this summer.
