Business Development for 8 years focusing on solutions to retrofit existing buildings and the carbon footprint and impact of solutions.
Speaker at dozens of conferences on glass, windows, building upgrades, and energy savings.
Proposed Session Description
Roughly 70% of the existing building stock has sub-code windows. LL97 compliance and >40% energy reductions will likely reach well beyond systems upgrades. Session will look at existing buildings, window strategies utilized, and energy/carbon savings calculations to help demystify the potential options.
Why is this session important?
This session addresses both significant carbon savings in existing buildings as well as the time value of carbon around these buildings. Strategies will show effective means to minimize cost and overall carbon compared to traditional upgrade strategies. Case studies will show emerging technologies can address these more challenging building upgrades and return a carbon payback of the embodied carbon material impacts of less than one year with building upgrades.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Facade upgrades require local tradespeople to install, upgrade, and complete. Building improvement projects create new high-paying jobs, skilled trades, and are not transferrable resources that can be effectively exported. Local workforce training and engagement are significant portions to the strategy to addressing the existing building stock.
Learning Objectives
Explain the energy reduction challenges of retrofitting versus new construction.
Identify emerging technologies that can help upgrade existing buildings and significantly reduce carbon usage.
Explain how low embodied/high operational carbon savings creates a more compelling climate change solution with immediate occupant savings and benefits.
Demonstrate knowledge of emerging technologies that enable onsite power generation and benefit grid electrification efforts.

Anything else you'd like to tell us about your session proposal?
Addressing the underperformance of existing facades will be an eventuality. The carbon analysis results show this to be an extremely effective tool to quickly reduce overall carbon usage of the largest carbon consuming sector. The presentation isn't a one-size fits all, but more a strategy to investigate alternatives and identify options for improvements.
