What is NESEA?

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) helps high-performance building and energy efficiency professionals improve their practices by learning from and networking with one another. NESEA runs 20+ events a year, from large scale conferences in the major cities of the Northeast to small groups gathering to share lessons learned. Our programming is designed to appeal to both a seasoned veterarn and new professional, with programs offering opportunities to learn from the grow with one another in the high perfomance-building space. Founded in 1975, NESEA is today the region's leading 501(c)(3) membership organization promoting sustainable energy practices in the built environment. NESEA is run by a small dedicated staff, who are overseen by a board of directors.

NESEA is a member supported non-profit, meaning that our membership drives both our content and bottom line. We depend on our community and in turn provide opportunities, connections and information that our members can depend on. NESEA offers a variety of different types of membership to fit you or your organization's needs.

What are NESEA's programs?

BuildingEnergy Conferences: BuildingEnergy conferences & trade shows are the flagship program of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association. Bringing together 1000+ people, including some of the most innovative and respected members of our community, these conferences are a chance to learn from, and exchange ideas with, the very best in the Northeast. NESEA runs two conferences a year, one in Boston and one in New York City. The content of these conferences is curated by volunteer committees of NESEA members to ensure that sessions are data-driven, diverse, and genuinely useful to professionals and practitioners working to create a more sustainable built environment. BuildingEnergy trade shows bring a variety of industry leaders together for unparalleled opportunities to network and showcase their products and services. Read more...

BuildingEnergy Pro Tours: BuildingEnergy Pro Tours are accredited tours of high performance buildings across the Northeast. They allow members of our community to learn about all aspects of cutting edge projects, from design strategies and materials selection to construction techniques and energy systems. By hosting a Pro Tour, you and the rest of your project team can showcase your work while connecting with fellow practitioners. Learn more...

BuildingEnergy Bottom Lines: Bottom Lines is a business development program that uses the peer coaching model and is open only to NESEA Business Members. The program consists of six regional peer groups of NESEA Business Members dedicated to sustainability in the built environment. In a typical year, each group meets twice for a two-day facilitated session at an individual member’s place of business. The network communicates online year-round. Bottom Liners share the inner workings of their businesses with their peers who help them sharpen their skills and improve their triple bottom line (People, Planet, and Profit). Learn more...

Our Mission and Vision

NESEA advances sustainability practices in the built environment by cultivating a cross-disciplinary community where practitioners are encouraged to share, collaborate and learn. We envision a vibrant and resilient built environment that supports climate justice and equity.

Our work is vital to increasing sustainability, especially in the building sector. In the United States, the building sector accounts for nearly half of all energy consumption. It also produces nearly half of all greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest single contributor to climate change. To shape the built environment is to shape the future not only of our cities and towns, but also of our planet.

Where is NESEA Located?

Headquartered in Greenfield, MA, NESEA operates primarily in the northeastern United States (the six New England states plus New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania), but we increasingly reach out to share ideas nationally and internationally. For example, we’ve collaborated with the German Consulate and the Upper Austria Trade Commission to bring cutting-edge products and information from Europe to our BuildingEnergy conferences & trade shows.
