Proposed Session Description
NYC 2030 District has completed a 3-year NYSERDA Clean Heating & Cooling campaign entitled 'Heat/Cool Smart Brooklyn'. We engaged hundreds of stakeholders and a range of Multi-Family properties to start the retrofit process, gaining a clear understanding of the diverse challenges these properties face. We will present the campaign's findings and recommend solutions to meet the essential project of making comprehensive energy upgrades to NY's large (over 1.5M units) Multi-Fam building stock.
Why is this session important?
Complex and widely varied buildings, systems, ownership and occupancy types require flexible and adaptable programs and resources. These generally do not exist, and those programs which are available are fragmented and siloed, making them practically inaccessible to stakeholders, particularly to LMI and small-medium sized buildings. 'Electrify Everything' is a pipe dream unless we solve this problem.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Retrofitting NY housing stock is essential to achieving equitable economic, climate and environmental justice objectives. NYC2030 is devoted to implementing community-based and district scale solutions. These are not on the table of policy options or in the ballpark of available solutions.
Learning Objectives
Understanding the scale of the Multi-Family retrofit problem so attendees can frame the discussion with stakeholders and policy makers.
See specific NYC property types at a level of detail to establish a scale of the obstacles to be overcome and options for possible solutions.
Identify the range of technologies, installations and efficiency measures which are really available and the degree of accessibility for resources which may help.
Address the challenges to integrate solutions for comprehensive retrofit projects, and discuss potential for aggregation of projects.
