Proposed Session Description
Becker + Becker Associates is the architect, developer, owner, and operator of Hotel Marcel, a 165-room all-electric boutique hotel and conference center in New Haven powered by the sun. This LEED Platinum project is a conversion of the formerly vacant Pirelli Building, and is the first Passive House certified hotel in the US. All building systems are fossil-fuel free, including domestic hot water, laundry, and the hotel kitchen, and include a PV array and microgrid with 1MWH of battery backup.
Why is this session important?
We believe this project is a trailblazing proof of concept for an all-electric hotel, as well as

Cuadra Comment: Maybe The talk will discuss the Passive House retrofit of a hotel in CT. The hotel is fully electric, including the use of DHW.  The talk was first presented in Boston, and it was very popular. Is NYC the right market for this talk?  I think a couple of architects should weigh in if this talk should be presented at our conference.

Maybe, the project is a New Haven, CT retrofit project for a full electric hotel that pursued both LEED and Passive House certificaion. As per this years RFP this proposed session can potentially be an ideal  for embodiing the objective of "[incorperating]  decarbonization, electrification, and repurposing of existing building stock". Lessons Learned and a full overview of the design and construction of the hotel would be beneficial insight.   Since building went into operation approximately a year ago (May 2022), I would inqury further into recent building performance studies that were conducted for the building and how these findings would be incorperated into the presentation for the NYC 2023 Concerence.

Learning Objectives
Explain how all-electric and on-site renewable technologies can be incorporated into projects.
Identify appropriate applications for incorporation of high performing envelopes, air-source heat pumps for HVAC and domestic hot water, and Battery Energy Storage.
Discuss with clients how the incorporation of these systems into commercial development will enhance economic performance and market demand.
Avoid making some of the same mistakes by identifying lessons learned from the design and construction of Hotel Marcel.
Has this session been presented before?
Yes
When and Where?
A version was presented by Bruce Becker at BuildingEnergy Boston 2023, and was one of the most popular sessions at the conference.

Comments about your speaker roster
Bruce Becker is unfortunately not available for the NYC conference dates, but Alice and Violette, who were the project architects for the hotel, are very familiar with the project and have given many tours and talks to industry groups at the hotel, and are prepared to share Becker + Becker's knowledge and experience on the project.
