Proposed Session Description
We will share our experience with the design, permitting, installation, commissioning, and operation of 14 large-capacity central heat pump water heating plants from Lync, Mitsubishi, Aermec, and Waterdrop at existing low-income multifamily buildings in disadvantaged communities in NYC (9) and CA (5). What works? What doesn’t? We have learned many lessons the hard way and will share what we’ve learned to help accelerate the adoption of all-electric water heating systems in New York.
Why is this session important?
In many cities, multifamily buildings are the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions. To meet our decarbonization goals, we need to increase focus on electrifying existing multifamily buildings, but transitioning these buildings to highly-efficient electric systems is complex. Central heat pump water heating systems are pivotal to electrifying multifamily (and commercial) buildings, but these systems have numerous design and installation challenges that can sink a project if not adequately understood and accounted for. Through AEA’s work on cutting-edge early-stage demonstration projects, we have learned many of the lessons the industry will need to understand in order to deploy these clean-energy systems at scale and meet our climate commitments in New York and beyond.

Round 1: YES, This is a well put together proposal. It would be helpful to know the metrics for these comparisons in Round 2.

Round1: Yes- A Holistic proposal on heatpumps.- clarify if case studies are added while explaining the pros & cons.

Round 1 discussion:- Speaker combo is great- Having post installation data would be ideal- Well put together- Stronger than other heat pump proposals- Heat pump combined with solar thermal panels for DHW?(Amalia Cuadra wants to talk to them)

Amalia Cuadra Fri, 06/09/2023 - 5:09 pm

Round 2 -- 100% YES! The speakers have several case studies to speak from. They have unique lessons learned and talking points about design and installation challenges. They also have pre-installation data. A good subsect of the projects will be done before our conference. I think the two AEE speakers can carry the talk.

Ben Sachs-Hamilton Thu, 06/22/2023 - 1:49 pm

R2 meeting: Half of buildings will be completed by the conferece, but no cold weather performance data. Focus this one on the project, with maybe a session next year on performance.

Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our session highlights projects that are bringing the benefits of clean heating to low-income residents in disadvantaged communities by deploying next generation all-electric systems in affordable housing.
Learning Objectives
Describe the key aspects of central heat pump water heating design and installation that are different from traditional gas water heating.
Analyze their own new construction and retrofit projects for opportunities as well as potential challenges to the design, installation, and operation of central heat pump water heating systems.
Choose the optimal central heat pump water heating equipment and installation parameters for each project based on a variety of factors.
Interpret performance data for central heat pump water heating systems to aid in system commissioning and ongoing operations.
