Proposed Session Description
Demand response has been around for a couple of decades, but electrification and the proliferation of IoT, battery storage, and EVs presents a host of new options. Increased electric loads mean increased curtailment potential, which in turn means more revenue. Automation allows for participation in more grid services programs. All of this puts money back in the pocket of the building owner, who may otherwise be feeling the pinch from decarbonization and energy market volatility.
Why is this session important?
Many automation solutions don't view themselves as part of the DR value chain, but as a result, building operators are leaving money on the table. Also, this is an opportunity to help safeguard the reliability of our electric grids, ever more important as the grid is called on to serve a larger role than it ever has before.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
Equity - demand response is a program that helps mitigate the need for dirty peaker plants, which are disproportionately sited in EJ communities. Additionally, demand response helps prevent outages, which disproportionately affect marginalized communities both because of deferred maintenance of grid infrastructure in those communities, as well as the dearth of back-up generators, battery storage, and rooftop solar in EJ communities.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will understand the process for participating in demand response, from both a business and technical perspective.
Attendees will understand what programs are available in the NYC area (or wherever they might be coming from)
Attendees will learn some of the building technologies that have been proven to deliver demand response capability.
Attendees will learn how demand response advances ESG goals.
